Bone Density Testing (Dexa Scan)

The threat of osteoporosis—the loss of bone thickness and strength—is a threat to every aging adult, women and men. While osteoporosis is typically viewed as a woman’s disease, a surprising number of men are at risk as well. The good news is that bone loss can be detected early and treated or prevented.
The National Osteoporosis Association recommends a healthy diet, weight-bearing exercise and a bone density screening as part of the strategy to prevent bone loss. Our Galen North Primary Care office offers bone densitometry for patients who need the service.

In most cases, a bone density test is recommended at age 50. However, family history, a history of eating disorders and other risk factors might indicate the need for a test at a younger age. Talk to your Galen doctor about your needs and concerns.
